Group Marks 61st Anniversary of Hiroshima and Nagasaki

(Peace Quest Update, August 2006)

To the dark backdrop of war in the Middle East, people around the world gathered on August 6 and 9 to mourn the atomic destruction of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, expressing their indignation at the growing danger of nuclear proliferation and conflict and proclaiming their determination to work for a future free of all weapons of mass destruction and terror. As it has since 2002, Peace Quest hosted a solemn commemoration at Cape Breton University to give local voice to the growing global call for peace and sanity. The event, previewed by an article in the Cape Breton Post (‘World Sleepwalks Toward Nuclear Horror,’ August 5), featured a presentation by Sean Howard, adjunct professor of political science at CBU, followed by poetry, readings, music, a ‘litany of remembrance for the nuclear age’, and discussion.
