THE ABOLITION OF WAR: FROM DREAM TO REALITY

This is the text of a presentation given by Sean Howard at a seminar hosted by the University College of Cape Breton Centre for International Studies, and by Peace Quest Cape Breton. The seminar coincided with the United Nations International Day of Peace, September 21st.
A world without war has been a dream of so many people for so long – armed conflict has been a fact of human life in so many regions for so many centuries – that it is sometimes easy to mistake the dream for a fantasy, to assume that war will always be with us, a time-honoured “continuation of politics by other means”, a way of doing business inherited from our ancestors, part of human nature, bred by our environment, wired into our genes. The International Day of Peace: Building a New Human Loyalty

On September 21, thousands of events around the world will be held to mark the United Nations’ International Day of Peace. Timed to coincide with the opening of the annual session of the General Assembly, the Day of Peace is designed to refocus world attention on the fundamental objective of the UN Charter – “to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war” – and to promote the creation of a Culture of Peace to reverse the spiral of violence and hatred plaguing the planet and imperiling our common future.
