The world’s first nuclear weapons – the first of over 100,000 nuclear weapons built so far – were designed and tested in the desert of New Mexico, colonized by the Spanish in the sixteenth century, acquired in war by the United States in 1848, and for many millennia the sacred homeland of the pueblo Peoples of ‘Turtle Island’, as North America is traditionally known.
